Filing for office

Minneapolis Elections & Voter Services only handles candidate filings for municipal elections and the Minneapolis School Board. The City of Minneapolis has a contract with Minneapolis Special School District No. 1 to administer elections on their behalf.

Petition in Place of a Filing Fee

For municipal offices a petition that takes the place of a filing fee may be submitted by the candidate at the same time as the affidavit of candidacy.

The number of signatures required on a petition in place of a filing fee can differ depending on the office sought, and the number of votes cast within the election district for the office at the previous election. Signature requirements for upcoming Minneapolis Municipal races can be found immediately below: 

Petitions in place of filing fees can only be signed by those eligible to vote for the candidate.

Petition forms must meet certain legal standards. Templates for petitions are produced by the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State. NOTE: Petitions must be submitted on legal (8 1/2 x 14) paper.

Campaign FINANCE & reporting

Candidates must submit regular fundraising and expenditure reports. Campaign reporting requirements differ depending upon the office being sought.

Candidates for Minneapolis School Board need to register and file an initial report with Hennepin County within 14 days of spending or raising $100, and meet deadlines with the county.
